What is a Linguistic Proofreader?
Simply put, a Linguistic Proofreader is a regular proofreader, but with more advanced knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures. L.P.s polish works written by those who are not a native speaker of the language they are writing in.
Examples:
A transfer student from Japan who has to write a PhD dissertation in English
A Russian to English Translator who needs his work proofread before turning it in
A British citizen who needs her book manuscript to be more "American."
A Linguistic Proofreader has the cultural knowledge and proofreading experience to understand what the author was trying to say, no matter what his or her native language is.
Why do I need a Linguistic Proofreader? Won't a regular one do?
Well, yes. Kind-of.
A regular proofreader has a firm grasp on the vocabulary, grammar, context, and syntax of the language they are working with, but may lack the cultural knowledge and sensitivity necessary to understand what the author is trying to say.
For example, some cultures prefer indirect/passive communication instead of speaking directly.
(e.g. "the ball was thrown by her" instead of "she threw the ball")
Linguistic Proofreaders offer that extra "oomph."
Give me a try, and see for yourself.
